This Cumulus filter allows you to catalog images compressed according to the JPEG algorithm. Files must have the type “JPEG” or “JFIF”. These file types are similar and the following information applies to both.
The filter can catalog all images meeting the “JPEG File Interchange Format” standard as well as all other JPEG files containing a PICT preview. Other files—those that are compressed according to some variant of the JPEG algorithm and do not contain a preview—will create an error.
If a JPEG or JFIF file contains a preview, the preview will be used for creating the thumbnail. If no preview is present, the image itself needs to be decompressed which requires QuickTime to be installed. (QuickTime contains a JPEG compression/decompression component.) Cumulus can also automatically take advantage of properly installed QuickTime-compatible JPEG decompression hardware which usually is much faster than software decompression.
There is no type-specific information for JPEG or JFIF files.
